RENEWAL OF THE COMPETITION APPEAL BOARD

The Minister for Trade and Industry has re-appointed the Chairman and members of the Competition Appeal Board (CAB) for another two years, with effect from 1 September 2007.

The establishment of the CAB is provided for under the Competition Act. The purpose of the CAB is to hear appeals relating to decisions made by the Competition Commission of Singapore[1]. The CAB shall have all the powers and duties of the Commission that are necessary to perform its functions and discharge its duties under the Act. The CAB shall also have the powers, rights and privileges vested in a District Court on the hearing of an action.

The CAB Chairman is Mr. Thean Lip Ping, a Consultant with Khattar Wong. Members of CAB include lawyers, economists, accountants, and representatives from the banking and business sectors. The list can be found in the Annex. They were first appointed to CAB on 1 September 2005 for a period of two years.

[1] Further appeals to the CAB’s decisions, on points of law or the amount of financial penalties imposed, may be made to the High Court and ultimately, the Court of Appeal.
