I was drawn to MTI because of my strong interest in international diplomacy. I was keen to play a role in Singapore's trade relations on the international stage. The negotiations taught me to think on my feet as I had to learn how to convey my stand concisely and find a common meeting ground.

My work in the Economist Service has provided me with the opportunity to learn about a myriad of economic issues, ranging from global macroeconomic developments to structural challenges facing domestic economies. I benefit and learn from the diversity of views of my colleagues, who are often very open to share their views on economic issues, and knowledge on new empirical methods. I have seen for myself how rigorous empirical methodologies can be applied to better understand the impact of schemes, forecast growth, and examine trends in the labour market.

The wide range of work that I have done, for instance in relation to Singapore’s medium-term GDP growth, the relationship between productivity and wage growth, and understanding fiscal trends, have enabled me to become a more thoughtful and well-rounded economist.
