Two Economics students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) received the inaugural Economist Service Awards from the Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, at an award ceremony on 13 Oct 08 at the NUS’ University Cultural Centre Theatre.

23rd year Economics student Mr Koh Wei Ning received the MTI-ES (Ministry of Trade and Industry-Economist Service) Book Prize, while Ms Dorcas Low Shu Juan, who graduated with 2nd Upper Honors in 2008, received the MTI-ES Best Thesis Award. The awards recognize their outstanding academic achievement amongst Economics students in the National University of Singapore (NUS).

3. Speaking at the award ceremony, Minister Lim Hng Kiang shared with the students the economic challenges ahead, “As our economy matures, it will become more and more challenging to sustain our economic growth … … Even as the world continues to change, we must be guided by the principles that our economy is based on: a pro business environment and strong and stable macro fundamentals.”

4. In conjunction with the award ceremony, an MTI-NUS Economic Dialogue session was held. The dialogue session provided students with insights into economic policymaking. Views and ideas between students, academics and MTI Economists were exchanged during the session chaired by Second Permanent Secretary of MTI, Mr Ravi Menon. Other panelists included Associate Professor Chia Ngee Choon, NUS Department of Economics; Mr Tan Kim Eng, Director at Standard & Poor's; and Dr Thia Jang Ping, Research Economist from MTI.

5. Through the awards and dialogue session, students were given a better understanding of the MTI Economist Service, and the work of public sector Economists in helping to evaluate policy options and shape the country’s economic strategies.
