Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Introduction
1. Good morning to all. I want to thank Life3 Biotech and Union Power for inviting me to be here. I am pleased to be a part of the groundbreaking ceremony of Life3 Urban Sustainability Hub (LUSH).
Technology and innovative and sustainable methods of food production are critical for food security
2. As the global population is expected to grow from the current 7 billion to an expected 10 billion by 2050, demand for food will undoubtedly continue to increase.
a. At the same time, the agri-food industry in different parts of the world is grappling with shocks and uncertainties that affect the food supply.
b. With climate change, weather patterns have become more erratic across the world. For example, prolonged dry spells, heatwaves, and floods can threaten crop yields and reduce food production.
c. Beyond these natural factors, the COVID-19 pandemic and geo-political conflicts have heightened disruptions and uncertainties in the food supply chain.
3. Given this, it is vital to have diversified and resilient food supply chains and a sustainable food ecosystem.
a. Singapore is especially vulnerable. We are more susceptible to food supply disruptions because we import most of our food. This is why the Government has set a “30 by 30” goal to produce 30% of our nutritional needs by 2030.
b. Due to our small size and natural constraints, we must work around limited water and land, which are critical for food production. Hence, it is even more important for the agri-food industry in Singapore to leverage technology and adopt innovative and sustainable food production methods.
4. The low-carbon, smart, urban food production system that Life3 Biotech has been developing is an excellent example of this.
a. I am pleased to hear from Life3 Biotech that they are working with partners like Union Solar to develop a system that leverages renewable energy and proprietary AI-enabled software and technology to enable more resource-efficient food production.
5. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony of the Life3 Urban Sustainability Hub (LUSH) is a milestone for Life3 Biotech and a significant step in the right direction for the agri-food industry. I hope more companies will be inspired to find innovative and sustainable ways to enhance their food production.
Building a community and the talent pipeline
6. While it is important for partners to collaborate on and invest in technologies and infrastructure, investing in workforce capabilities and nurturing the talent pipeline is just as important. This will strengthen and ensure the future of Singapore’s agri-food industry.
a. The MOUs signed later today between Life3 Biotech, ITE, and NYP are a testament to Life3 Biotech’s commitment and efforts to cultivate young talent in agri-food.
b. The MOU will provide invaluable opportunities for tertiary students to work in the agri-food industry and learn from apprenticeships. Through these avenues, the students can build their knowledge and skills, hone their interest in agri-food, and ultimately contribute to a steady pipeline of skilled professionals who will be the sector's future.
7. Furthermore, I am delighted to hear about Life3 Biotech’s commendable efforts to work with grassroots organisations and engage the local community through site tours and workshops for residents.
a. This will give residents the chance to understand better the challenges of food production and the innovative technologies in the industry.
b. This will also influence their consumption patterns and encourage them to be open to more local produce.
c. Everyone can play a part towards a brighter future for Singapore.
Conclusion
8. Congratulations to the management and staff of Life3 Biotech and Union Power on the groundbreaking of the Life3 Urban Sustainability Hub. I wish you every success in your endeavours.
9. Thank you.
